Smash Ultimate Summer 2019 Power Rankings

Summer 2019 Power Rankings are here

We're actually a few weeks into the fall PR already and a bit late sending this one out. Above you'll find our top 10 power ranked Smash Ultimate players, as well as three honorable mentions. Read on below for details on how we reached these and what the future state of the PR might look like. As a reminder we play every Friday night after 7 pm at LAN Mob Gaming Center in Rome, NY - cost is $5 and we always have some kind of  special event going, from doubles to Melee to custom map events.

We saw probably close to 100 different players this summer, so we needed a criteria to filter these down somewhat. Below are the rough criteria required to be considered:

  • Attendance in at least two weeks during the PR period, which is the same condition we used for Spring PR.
  • Multiple top-5 placings (5th place is always a tie with two individuals, so technically top-6 placing). Individuals who can show they often can place in the top 25% of bracket are good considerations for the power rankings.
  • Each placing is weighted considerably more than the one below it, for example 1st is worth considerably more than 2nd, which is worth more than 3rd, etc.
  • We also considered the competition in a given week, since attendance varies by week. For example - once we settled on Kremling and Misfire as our clear top two based on their placings, weeks they competed in were given higher weightings than those they had not attended. Meaning if you did well in a week that Kremling or Misfire were there that helped your score.
  • Head to head matches. Two spots in particular we had to do a deep dive into the heads up matches were Kremling vs. Misfire and CaptJelly vs. Birder. We feel like the order accurately reflects their head to head history.

I'm still working on connecting to the Challonge API and doing much of this work automatically, but in the meantime we have whiteboards!

As you can clearly see
As was stated above we had to do a deep dive into some individual match histories to break those close ties. In addition to the honorable mentions of Waft%, SKD & Bleak, others that appeared in top-6 placings included Dbot, Xifaxan, Electrified, Jester, Droovy, and Hero.

Fall PR

We are a few weeks into the Fall PR but expect that we'll have another few solid months of open power ranking period, and you'll likely see the Fall PR graphic drop sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you want to be ranked then make sure to show up for at least two weeks and do well! Friendlies opens around 6 pm Friday nights and we're usually playing Smash in various forms until close to midnight. $5 entry cost, or if you like we also sell a special $10 pass that gives access to all our systems for the night including PCs, Xbox, and PS4.

Sponsorship to RetroGameCon November 2nd in Syracuse, NY

We're extending a RetroGameCon Smash Ultimate sponsorship to all of the 18 & under players on our Summer PR! Kremling, Misfire, RockyC, CaptJelly and TheBirder will all be receiving t-shirts and buy-ins to both the convention & Smash Ultimate tournament on Saturday November 2nd. Congrats fellas!

Happy 4 year anniversary! We are closed today for Labor Day and I wanted to extend a thank you to everyone who has helped support the shop over the past four years, provide some highlights from the past year, and some of our plans for the coming year.

The Team

I'll start off by thanking the team at LAN Mob for everything they do to keep our shop chugging along. Enrique, Rob, and Alex are all-stars and I'm grateful for all the ways they help both myself and the LAN. They are the most valuable resource our business has and help make my job around the shop easier. Beyond the immediate team is a wide net of individuals who help support us in different ways, and it's grown so wide that if I tried to name them all I would surely miss a bunch, but you know who you are and you guys rock.

Past Year Highlights

It's been an exciting year with lots of events happening both in shop and outside it. Together with the City of Rome and Nomad Cinemas we ran outdoor Fortnite and Mario Kart events, with sponsorship help of Rome Fire Department. In January we hosted Rome Police Department for a community outreach Game-In with local kids. We held several Copper City Clash fighting game events at MVCC Rome campus in both fall & spring semesters, and visited the Rising Stars Soccer Club in Westmoreland to run a Rocket League event out on the field. We helped Albany Game Expo's inaugural event by running Smash Ultimate and Melee brackets. These outside events are always a fair bit of work and planning, but are a great way for us to reach out and meet new gamers and help give back to the community.

Within the shop we kept a busy schedule of events throughout the year including: Winter WonderMob (100 events in 91 days), ggChampions beta, Fortnite $25k, and numerous weekly events. In August we celebrated our 200th lock-in weekend with a double overnight event both Friday and Saturday nights. Our in house Rome Revolution esports team continued to grind away at League of Legends and Overwatch, with the League team going undefeated 7-0 in Titan Esports regular season. Our friend Kolunas won a trip in the fall to visit the Team Liquid training facility and compete in an event in Las Vegas sponsored by Alienware.

I wanted to highlight two communities that I've seen outstanding growth in the last year, the first being our Smash Ultimate community. We restarted a weekly with the release of Smash Ultimate in December, which really began as a crew battle competition against other LAN centers but morphed into a regular weekly event. We took a decidedly different direction with the night, slashing our buy-in to $5, adding a second rotating special event every week, and removing payouts (we still comp free hours, drinks to winners). It's a heated competition every Friday night but the focus is much more on learning and enjoying the game, and the toxicity is very low. I couldn't be happier with the way the community has developed and some of the players that show up are playing at an incredible level for their age. More on this later.

We're pretty packed Friday nights!

The second community that has seen tremendous growth around the shop is our Discord community. Last year we had just maybe a few dozen members, and we've quickly grown to over 200+, all local gamers. We keep 40 text channels and 20 voice channels and our invite links are publicly available around the shop, or from any existing member of the Discord. The chat can sometimes move very fast but the staff works to actively moderate.

Next Year Plans

We try to say yes to as many events as we can possibly do, but sometimes have turned down opportunities. So we don't yet know what the next year may bring, but am sure it will be full of great opportunities for local CNY gamers. Here is a short list of what we have planned currently:

  • TFT Tuesdays - sponsored by ggChampions and HP Omen! Play TeamFight Tactics every Tuesday at LAN Mob from 4 pm - midnight to earn points and get ranked nationally. Weekly winners earn Riot Points and top 64 players at the end of September will qualify to a finals competition for a shot at 8 Omen Gaming rigs valued at $3,000 each! As an avid TFT player myself I'm bummed I can't compete, but am excited to meet more TFT players. The first day is TOMORROW September 3rd! We're offering a special discount $15 pass for 4 -12 for anyone who wishes to play in the event, or you're also welcome to use our standard hourly pricing.
  • Winter WonderMob 2 - I loved planning the 100 events and it really gave me something to power through the long Upstate NY winter with, and will totally be doing this again!
  • Copper City Clash - We've been on summer break for a while but I'll be reaching out to MVCC to see if we can plan more fighting game events for this fall and next spring.
  • ggChampions - we're expecting more Fortnite and League of Legends opportunities this fall including High School leagues with bigger sponsorship packages.
  • Team LAN Mob @ PAX East 2020 - I've been promising the team for years that we will do this someday and I'm going to make it happen this next year, we'll be closing up shop for a few days and shipping off to Boston. We'll be sure to live tweet, blog, and Instagram everything that's going on for you!
  • Esports Teams - I'd love to continue to grow the Rome Revolution teams, and have plans for adding at least one game in the coming year, but for this next year I'm really focused on getting esports programs into the local high schools. I was super happy to see programs pop up at Westmoreland and Holland Patent this past year, and I'm all-in on bringing a program to Rome schools. If you're attending a Rome school please talk to club organizers, athletics directors, guidance counselors, vice principals, and anyone else who will listen and tell them that you want an esports program in Rome! If they need convincing please get me their contact details and I'll give them a call or email!
  • Sponsorship - We've had some awesome opportunities coming through from our partners at ggCircuit and iGames, but have wound down our own LAN Mob sponsorships to focus on growing the shop. This is an area you'll see us begin to transition back into over the next couple of years, and I want to find ways to develop some of the talents we've discovered locally in a healthy way. I feel like starting high school teams and continuing our weekly competitions (like Smash) are a great first step in this direction. I would like to - over the next year - support a handful of WNY/CNY/Upstate/Capital Region events with 100+ players, to give some of our better players some exposure to larger events that attract bigger fish. The first on my radar is RetroGameCon Syracuse this November.
  • After School Fiver - returning this week, two hours of gaming for $5, with a new special DOUBLE FIVER for $10 good for a 2-8 pm pass, Monday through Friday.
  • Cherry Cola BAWLS Bottles (10 oz) - Ordered today and are on the way!

Thanks again everyone for four years and we're looking forward to year five! In closing as a reminder - school is back in session this week and we've helped put together a list of Amazon wishlists for local Rome, NY teachers to help them get supplied and up and running this week. Some of the lists have cleared but there are still plenty of items needed, please click the link below and help out if you can!
