Games That Turn 20 This Year!

The 90s sure are a nostalgic time. 1998 is regarded as one of the best years in gaming alongside 1997. In my opinion they both have had some of the greatest releases of all time. From games that would help birth the realm of eSports to games that helped prove that Video Games were just as great as any other form of media.

Resident Evil 2
January 21

Resident Evil 2 to me, is the greatest horror game ever made. The way it's paced is perfect right from the start. It's a game I can always revisit and enjoy myself. It also introduced the best character in the franchise, Leon. I'm hoping for some news on the Remake at E3 this June!

February 11

While it never reached the height of popularity like Final Fantasy did, Xenogears is still a cult classic for good reason. The story is on par with plenty of the games released even today. Even though they had to rush production and couldn't make the final product they wanted, it still came out incredible.

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins
February 26

Ninja games are rad. Tenchu was on another level though. It's unique approach to stealth helped shape the future stealth genre. Though as the years went on the series would fall short, there are rumors of it's return. Hopefully it's true!

Parasite Eve
March 29

Parasite Eve is a Horror-RPG and was also Squaresoft's (now Square-Enix) first array into the M rated category. It doesn't shy from showing how gruesome the game can be at times too. It's a great blend of action and RPG elements with the use of firearms being your primary source of attacking.

Blizzard's next RTS game was a bit different compared to Warcraft. And in my opinion, helped shaped eSports to what it is today. Playing this on was a ton of fun and I still have fond memories of it.

Final Fantasy Tactics
June 20

A year after the release of Final Fantasy VII, fans of the series were waiting for the next Final Fantasy release. The next year Tactics would be released. With it's incredible story, graphics, and gameplay; everything about this game still holds up today.

Banjo Kazooie
June 29

Two years after Super Mario 64, Rareware released their own 3D platformer and with it's banter between characters and its "collectathon" nature, helped seperate it from being just a simple Mario clone.

Brave Fencer Mushashi
July 16

Another great SquareSoft game! Brave Fencer Mushashi was a Action-Adventure RPG. With real-time combat and voice over dialogue with a really cool day/night cycle as well. It also helped that Square vets Tetsuya Nomura and Hironobu Sakaguchi also were behind the scenes.

Metal Gear Solid
September 3

A game that revolutionized gaming even further than before and turned Hideo Kojima into the powerhouse that he is. The games form of story telling and gameplay changed the way games were viewed as a format of entertainment. The cutscenes and intense boss battles were important in making Metal Gear Solid one of the best selling games of the year.

Spyro The Dragon
September 9

Hopefully we'll be seeing the announcement of the remastered trilogy soon because Spyro the Dragon is one of the best 3D platformers ever made. The music, characters, and levels all hold a special place in my heart. 20 years though? LOL SPYRO REMASTER CONFIRMED.

October 21

One of my personal favorites. Medievil is a fantastic adventure game that I have plenty of fond memories with. Sir Daniel Fortesque is one of my favorite gaming protagonists even though he can't really talk.

Grim Fandango
October 30

Grim Fandango is one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've had on PC. The setting and characters were very well designed and acted. If you ever find the opportunity to play it do it!

November 8th

Though it's hailed as one of the greatest games ever released on PC, I never finished Half-Life. Even 11 years after it's sequel, doesn't stop everyone from forever wishing for the fabled Half-Life 3.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
November 21

Ocarina of Time as you know is regarded as the greatest game of all time. For most people it's true. Ocarina of Time is an incredible experience that changed the Legend of Zelda series for the better.

Mario Party
December 18

Gran Turismo
December  23

I'm not a big car guy by any means. Gran Turismo however, is the only thing that made me slightly interested in them. The courses were awesome and the selection of cars (over 100 licensed cars!) were fantastic.  Each vehicle handled differently and allowed you to change them as well. Swapping around suspensions, tires, etc. I guarantee this game influenced some racers and mechanics along the way.
